[edit] Information

Howard Hawks is now regarded as one of the greatest directors ever to work in Hollywood. His career stretched from the silent era through the seventies and left an indelible stamp on American cinema. Howard Hawks directed more popular classics of the American cinema than almost any other director, yet compared to Hitchcock or Ford, his name was barely known outside of a circle of fanatical critics. Long considered merely a professional craftsman who could produce entertaining films in any Hollywood genre - westerns, screwball comedies, film noir, musicals - Hawks has since been hailed as the quintessential auteurist. This program includes previously unseen home movies and out-takes, and interviews with James Caan, Angie Dickenson, Lauren Bacall and Peter Bogdanovich. The genius of the man who directed classics such as HIS GIRL FRIDAY, SERGEANT YORK, TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, RED RIVER, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and so many classics is examined, and reveals one of the most formidable, complex, and enigmatic figures of Hollywood's Golden Age.
