An emotional farewell from Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams as he explores the hidden corners and meanings of England's oldest cathedral, his home for the last ten years. In a unique personal perspective, the Archbishop deciphers the living rituals, the art and architecture and the symbolism of Canterbury Cathedral. He also confronts the darker elements of the Cathedral's past - the transformation of the monastery from humble piety to greed and corruption, the artistic vandalism of the Reformation years and the centuries of conflict between church and state - including the violent deaths of some of his predecessors. Williams also explores with honesty and poignancy the unsettling resonances between the crises of past and present, many of which he has found himself at the heart of in recent years. In this film, one man's personal experience of the stones, the glass, the artworks and the people of our national cathedral come together in an intimate portrait and a touching farewell to a building, revealed as the embodiment of a never-ending battle for the soul of England. Broadcast on 1st Jan 2013
