Three programmes which look at how animals move through the air, over land and through water. What constraints or obstacles do they face and how do they overcome these? Is there a logical reason why animals are so different in terms of their size and shape?

[edit] Air

Movement in air is dominated by the problem of having to counter the force of gravity. This programme looks at the range of different anatomical, physiological, and behavioural solutions that birds and certain other animals have adopted to overcome gravity, and hence fly. The in-programme sequences were shot both in the wild and in the laboratory.

[edit] Land

This programme looks at the ways in which various terrestrial animals have adapted to move efficiently on land. It includes studies that are being carried out on horses, cheetahs, elephants, chimpanzees and kangaroos. These animals all have different lifestyles with different styles of locomotion.

[edit] Water

Examines the different ways in which vertebrate animals have overcome the problems that arise from moving in water, in particular the problems associated with drag and buoyancy. It contains film of a wide range of different animals in the wild and in the laboratory, ranging from small reef fish, eels, sharks, dolphins and whales.
